Welcome to Bessho Onsen.
This hot spring resort is located in Ueda, the centre of between Tokyo and Kyoto.
Ideally situated for easy access, it can be reached from Tokyo in only 90 minutes by train.
Ueda Castle, occupied approximately 400 years ago by Sanada Yukimura,one of Japan's most famous Samurai, nurtured the development of history and culture in the surrounding castle town.

Sightseeing

Bessho Onsen was written about in the 10th century in the famous Japanese historical collection of essays, The Pillow Book.
Of course, there are more several historical backgrounds or legends in this region.
Therefore, One thousand years later and Bessho Onsen is still a beloved place where visitors can relax in peace while gazing out over the lush mountains and rural landscape.
Although located near Tokyo, here one can appreciate the wonders of rural Japan and the beauty of the seasons' changing colors.

    Japan's most well-known flower, Sakura, is used in Ueda city's logo. Every year in mid-April, 400,000 visitors come to the Ueda Castle Senbon Sakura Festival, where 1,000 Sakura trees blossom throughout the castle grounds and are admired by festival-goers with a beer in one hand and some Takoyaki or Yakitori in the other. Udon and Tempura dishes made using the wild vegetables found only in this area are also valuable to taste.

    The picturesque mountains colored red and yellow is a wondrous sight. Almost as if all the ancient village has worn brilliant party dress. The 1200 year-old Aizen katsura tree's leaves turn yellow; the trees near Shogunzuka change to crimson; and many other trees besides display their bright colors to the passerby. The rice paddies ready for harvest reflect the sun's rays and paint the countryside with a golden hue. Surely the harvest in autumn makes a lot of seasonal local vegetables and mushrooms that give you an great appetite.

    The building is a bit old and the facilities are left as they were in former days, so it may compare unfavorably to newly built hotels and inns in this respect.

    Pure Japanese-style rooms with a view to a Japanese garden

    Suitable for a historic hot-spring inn, all 21 Japanese-style rooms are spacious and comfortable.
    There are 3 detached deluxe rooms with a cypress bath, so you can use a private room bath without inhibitions.
    Everything from the sturdy alcove posts to the lintel attests to the long standing tradition of this ryokan.
    The hanging scrolls and furniture give guests a gentle welcome and make you feel the history of the ryokan.
    A beautiful Japanese garden lies outside when you open the window.
    The garden plants changing from season to season have flowers that will accompany you during your stay.

    Under the premise of local production for local consumption, we use carefully selected seasonal ingredients to provide you with elaborate, hearty Kaiseki meals.
    In the spring, we offer wild vegetables such as fragrant Fuki buds and angelica sprouts.
    In summer, fresh sweetfish and char.
    In autumn, Matsutake mushrooms, yams, apples and Kyoho grapes.
    In winter, you can enjoy the strong taste of Shinshu beef.
    Kaiseki cuisine is beautiful, so you can enjoy it with your eyes as well.
    By special request, we will prepare meals in your room (for an extra charge).
    You can slowly enjoy Kaiseki cuisine in your own private space.

    A beauty hot spring that heals travel fatigue

    Stone paved corridors lead to a large public bath.
    Because there is a source in the premises, we have plenty of hot water flowing continuously, 24 hours a day.
    This smooth hot spring water called "beauty hot spring" is the most famous one in Nagano Prefecture.
    The open air bath adjacent to the public bath has skillfully arranged natural stones and looks completely like a Japanese garden.
    In the daytime you can soak in the rock bath and look at the sun and clouds drifting in the sky.
    At night, you can enjoy a beautiful sky full of twinkling stars.
    You can also drink hot spring water and feel how you get healthier from within your body.
    Make sure to get a taste of hot spring water with drinks such as shochu and coffee.

    At Nanjo Ryokan you can see the Japanese garden from all the rooms.
    The seasonal scenery will surely heal your tiredness from traveling.
    You can also take a walk in the garden, which changes its character every season.
    We grow a variety of flowers including rhododendron, azaleas and red Kobushi, so that you can appreciate them from up close.
    There are also flowers that cannot be seen from the guest rooms, so those who wish to see them will be shown to the garden.
